Writers' Wednesday: "Thyatira", Conclusion

Good evening, intrepid spacefarers! Tonight on "Writers' Wednesday", we conclude Chuckles' four-act original script for the series "Star Trek: Enterprise". The first three acts can be found here:

Next week, we will travel a little closer to home: Princeton, New Jersey; the year is: now. Our young, prolific scriptwriter, Chuckles, is presently deeply involved in organizing a full-blown convention to honor the television series "House" — including in-person appearances by cast members, behind-the-scenes workers, and so on. Details soon. (Have I mentioned that she's legally blind, and seriously ill?)

And to mark her efforts, we'll spend our Wednesday evenings in May with her first script for "House", titled "Keeping Secrets". In the meantime, let's get Captain Archer and his crew safely off the planet Thyatira. Things are about to get even weirder, and Dr. Phlox might just be losing his, er, patients…

ACT FOUR

FADE IN:

INTERIOR HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – MOVING – DAY

T'Pol, Trip and Debbie are STANDING in the room.

TRIP: I don't believe it. (BEAT) You look like one of us now.

DEBBIE: The drugs must have worn off.

She dashes over to a mirror and looks at her face.

T'POL (to Debbie): What drugs?

DEBBIE (to herself): I don't feel normal.

DEBBIE (to T'Pol): The drugs the doctors gave me.

T'Pol and Trip react. Then the DOOR OPENS. Archer and Reed enter, carrying phase pistols. Phlox enters with his scanner.

PHLOX'S POV:

He notices Debbie's change and rushes over to her. He begins scanning her.

PHLOX: Yep. She's human now.

ARCHER: Well, she stays like that?

PHLOX: It would appear so. As long as she isn't given any more of their drugs.

T'Pol walks over to Phlox.

T'POL: What are you talking about?

Phlox begins to fill her in. Trip walks over to Archer and Reed.

TRIP: What's with the phase pistols?

REED: Let's just say we ran into a black horse.

TRIP: Did it show up on the scanner?

REED: Nope.

ARCHER: Our phasers didn't have any effect on it, either.

TRIP: How can it not be… (BEAT) Never mind. I don't want to know.

ARCHER: I've been asking myself the same questions.

Phlox and T'Pol walk over to Archer and Reed.

PHLOX: Yep. Everything confirms what I suspected.

ARCHER: What did she tell you?

PHLOX: Her name was originally Debbie Summers. She said she is from Ohio.

REED: I should have picked up on her name being different.

TRIP: Especially with all the other weird names we've been hearing.

ARCHER: They sound almost like names you would find in a book.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR BUILDING – DAY

Archer and Trip and are standing in a corner, talking.

ARCHER: What do you mean, you can't find any mechanical devices in that house?

TRIP: T'Pol and I scanned and looked all over. We can't find anything.

ARCHER (angry): Something is sending off those signals.

TRIP: I know…

Trip is interrupted when T'Pol arrives.

ARCHER (angry, to T'Pol): Good. You're here. Maybe you can help us with a question.

T'POL: We may have bigger problem…

TRIP: Than finding out what's sending those signals?

T'POL: Yes.

ARCHER: What is it?

T'POL: It is eight o'clock PM.

ARCHER: So?

TRIP: The sun is still high.

T'POL: Exactly.

Archer looks outside.

ARCHER'S POV:

The SUN is SHINING as though it is twelve noon.

ARCHER: I don't believe it.

TRIP: What could be making it do that?

ARCHER: The question is: what… or who?

Phlox walks over.

PHLOX: Captain!

ARCHER: Yes, Doctor.

PHLOX: My patients are gone.

ARCHER: I'm not surprised.

Phlox has a startled look on his face.

ARCHER: You told us none of them were going to make it.

PHLOX: I don't mean passing on. I'm referring to people disappearing.

Archer looks around.

ARCHER'S POV:

Some of the BEDS are EMPTY. There are TWO MEN, in their 60's, dressed in BRIGHT WHITE GARMENTS, next to a Sardian. The Sardian is lying down in a bed.

ARCHER: Who are those two people?

Trip, Phlox and T'Pol react.

T'POL: Who?

Archer runs over to them.

ARCHER: Hey! You there!

The TWO MEN pick up the SARDIAN and VANISH before Archer gets to the bed. Archer stops.

ARCHER: They're gone.

Trip, Phlox, and Reed rush over.

REED: Where are they?

Archer looks around the bed.

ARCHER: They disappeared.

PHLOX: What were they doing?

ARCHER (surprised, to Phlox): Stealing your patients.

Everyone reacts.

CUT TO:

EXTERIOR SPACE – ENTERPRISE – (OPTICAL):

is orbiting around the planet.

INTERIOR BRIDGE – (OPTICAL)

Hoshi is at the com station.

HOSHI: Captain.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR BUILDING – DAY

Archer, Trip, Phlox, T'Pol and Reed are gathered by the building's entrance.

ARCHER (to com): Yes, Hoshi. What is it?

HOSHI'S COM VOICE: We're getting unusual signals from your location.

T'Pol uses the scanner.

T'POL (to Archer): No.

ARCHER (to com): Our scanners aren't picking up a thing.

HOSHI'S COM VOICE: The signal is right in front of you.

Archer quickly opens the front door.

CUT TO:

EXTERIOR BUILDING – DAY

The two MEN in WHITE are carrying another SARDIAN.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR BUILDING – DAY – CONTINUOUS

Archer is surprised.

ARCHER: They're doing it again.

He throws his communicator to Trip. Archer and T'Pol run out.

CUT TO:

EXTERIOR BUILDING – DAY – CONTINUOUS

as the two of them run toward the MEN in WHITE. The WIND begins to BLOW very hard, making Archer and T'Pol stop.

ARCHER: Where are they?

The two men in white VANISH.

T'POL: I'm not reading them, Captain.

The winds SUBSIDE when the two men leave.

ARCHER (to T'Pol): Give me your communicator.

T'Pol hands it over to Archer.

ARCHER (to com): Archer to Enterprise.

HOSHI'S COM VOICE: Enterprise. This is Hoshi.

ARCHER: Are you picking up that signal again?

HOSHI'S COM VOICE: Yes. It is two hundred meters north of your present location.

T'POL: That's Debbie's house.

ARCHER: Come to think of it, where is Debbie?

T'Pol uses her scanner.

T'POL: Strange. I'm not picking her on my scanner, either.

ARCHER: That does it. I'm going over there and find that machine.

Archer runs off. From another angle we see the two men in white watching him go.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY

The place looks like a tornado has gone through it. FURNITURE is KNOCKED OVER and things THROWN ALL OVER the room. Archer enters.

ARCHER: What in the world happened here?

The two MEN IN WHITE enter from the kitchen.

MAN #1: We've been expecting you, Jonathan.

Archer has a surprised look on his face.

ARCHER: How do you know my name?

MAN #2: We know everything about you, from the day you were born.

ARCHER: That's impossible.

MAN #1: Who do you think sent you the distress call?

ARCHER: It was a machine. We just haven't found it yet.

MAN #1: No, it wasn't.

MAN #2: (to Man #1): Some of these beings do not detect our signals.

ARCHER: What are you talking about? You're from the future, aren't you?

MAN #1: No, Jonathan. We've been sent here by a (BEAT) higher authority to correct the mistakes that have occurred on Thyatira.

ARCHER: Then what do you want of me?

MAN #2: To take Debbie back to your home world. She doesn't belong here. She's a victim of their mistakes.

MAN #1: (to man #2): We need to go.

They begin to FADE OUT.

ARCHER: No! Wait!

The two of them REAPPEAR.

ARCHER: You still haven't answered my one question.

MAN #1: What is that?

ARCHER: Who do you get your orders from?

MAN #2: Go look on the bedroom wall. You will see the King's face.

The two men vanish.

ARCHER: "King's face"?

INTERIOR HALLWAY – DAY – CONTINUOUS

as Archer walks over to the bedroom.

INTERIOR BEDROOM – DAY – CONTINUOUS

as Archer enters the bedroom and sees different pictures hanging on the wall. Then he finds one that catches his attention. He takes the photo off of the wall and holds it in his hand and then smiles.

ARCHER'S POV:

It appears to be a picture of Jesus, but with the same facial markings as the Sardians.

ARCHER: "The King's face".

CUT TO:

INTERIOR BUILDING – DAY

We see more of these PEOPLE in WHITE GARMENTS. Two at a time take a Sardian and vanish.

Phlox, Trip, Reed and T'Pol react to this.

PHLOX: (impatiently): What are these people doing with my patients?

T'POL: All I know is they're not registering on my scanner.

Trip remembers something from earlier.

TRIP: Just like the horses.

REED: I wish someone could make sense of all of this.

Man #1 REAPPEARS and WALKS OVER.

MAN #1: (to Reed): Your wish has already been granted.

REED: Huh?

MAN #1: Talk to your captain.

Reed takes his communicator and opens it.

REED: (to com): Reed to Captain Archer.

ARCHER'S COM VOICE: Archer here.

Phlox gets impatient and grabs the communicator from Reed.

PHLOX: (cutting in): This is Phlox. Those people are taking my patients!

CUT TO:

INTERIOR HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY

Archer is in the living room, talking on the communicator.

ARCHER: You mean there's more of them?

PHLOX'S COM VOICE: Well… yes.

ARCHER: How many are there?

PHLOX'S COM VOICE: I've counted over twenty.

ARCHER: They're on a special mission. Listen carefully: do not disturb them.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR BUILDING – DAY

Phlox has a surprised look on his face.

PHLOX: What is he talking about?

TRIP: I don't have any idea.

ARCHER'S COM VOICE: I don't have time to explain.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY

Archer is getting impatient talking to them.

ARCHER: Just do as I say!

TRIP'S COM VOICE: Aye, Captain.

Debbie enters, holding her side.

DEBBIE: I'm hurting.

Archer guides her to the floor.

ARCHER: Here, lie down.

Debbie grabs his arm.

DEBBIE: Don't let go of me, please!

Archer takes this in as if it is familiar.

ARCHER: I won't let go.

Then the FLOOR begins to BREAK OPEN. Debbie SCREAMS as she starts to FALL THROUGH.

DEBBIE: Hel…p!

ARCHER (frantic): No! Don't! Grab my hand!

Debbie swings her HAND and MISSES.

DEBBIE: I can't!

ARCHER: I'm slipping!

Archer begins to realize he is reliving his dream. He has a forceful look on his face and gathers strength.

ARCHER (to himself): I'm not going to let this happen again.

ARCHER (to Debbie): Hang on!

He pulls Debbie out of the hole. They both get up.

DEBBIE: Thanks.

Archer smiles.

CUT TO:

EXTERIOR SPACE – ENTERPRISE – (OPTICAL)

as the ship is in warp drive.

ARCHER (O.C.): Captain's log, supplemental. Debbie Summers is slowly adapting back to human life aboard the Enterprise while we take her to a Vulcan ship that is en route to Earth.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS – (OPTICAL)

Archer is in his quarters dictating his report and looking through some books.

ARCHER (CONT'D): I hope one day she can maybe forget all of this traumatic experience she encountered with the Sardians.

As he finishes looking at a book, he puts it away.

ARCHER (CONT'D): Captain's log, personal. There is so much that happened on Thyatira that I can't even put in my report to Starfleet. Some of it I don't think they would believe no matter how I told them.

Finally a particular book catches Archer's attention, and he reaches for it. There is a BUZZING at the door.

ARCHER (CONT'D, to com): Computer, pause.

ARCHER (to door): Come in.

T'Pol enters.

ARCHER: Did you need something?

T'POL: No. I just noticed that you've been acting differently after this mission, and I wanted to see how you are doing.

ARCHER: Phlox sent you, didn't he?

T'POL (reluctant): Yes.

ARCHER (smiling): You can reassure the good doctor that I am fine.

T'POL: Yes, Captain.

T'Pol begins to leave.

ARCHER: T'Pol.

T'POL: Yes.

ARCHER: Really. I'm all right.

T'POL: Yes, Sir.

T'Pol exits.

ARCHER (to computer): Computer, resume. Maybe this one is something that people need to deal with individually. Who is to say there isn't a higher power controlling things? Especially when I found myself reliving a dream over and over, and then experienced it in real life. Archer out.

Archer walks over to his bed, carrying the book. He gently brushes the dust off it.

REVEAL:

as we see the title of the book: HOLY BIBLE.

ARCHER (CONT'D, to himself): I think I'm behind on reading some of this material. Maybe if I'd more familiar with it, I might have been able to understand the Sardians better. Maybe mankind can benefit from it…

Archer opens the book and begins to read as we…

PAN BACK

CUT TO:

EXTERIOR SPACE – ENTERPRISE – (OPTICAL)

as it flies off to its next adventure…

FADE OUT.
